What breaks wudu? (Common nullifiers)

A practical list of common things that invalidate wudu, with a note on differences of opinion.

This is a practical checklist. Details can differ across madhhabs; confirm with a teacher you trust.

Common nullifiers (widely taught)

  • Using the restroom (urine/stool/gas).
  • Deep sleep (as a general rule).
  • Loss of consciousness.

Items with differences of opinion

  • Touching the opposite gender.
  • Touching private parts.
  • Bleeding (small vs large amounts).

If you’re following a school of thought, learn this list from that school and stick to it—don’t “mix and match” when you’re new.

Sources & notes

  • General fiqh references (varies by madhhab).
  • Qur’an 5:6 (wudu) and hadith chapters on purification.
Use a fiqh teacher to map details correctly for your madhhab.
