Umrah ka tarika (How to perform Umrah)
Step-by-step guide to performing Umrah: ihram, tawaf, sa'i, and halq/taqsir.

Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that can be performed anytime. It involves ihram, tawaf around the Kaaba, and sa'i between Safa and Marwah. Details can differ by madhhab—consult a qualified scholar or your group leader for specifics.
Before you start
- Enter ihram at the miqat (or before crossing it) for your route.
- Make intention (niyyah) for Umrah in your heart.
- Men: wear two pieces of unstitched cloth; women: modest dress covering the body.
Steps of Umrah
- Ihram: At the miqat, make intention and recite the talbiyah. Avoid what breaks ihram (clipping nails, perfume, etc.).
- Tawaf: Circumambulate the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise, starting at the Black Stone. Keep the Kaaba on your left. After tawaf, pray two rak'ah behind Maqam Ibrahim.
- Sa'i: Walk (or run between the green markers if able) between Safa and Marwah seven times, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah.
- Halq or Taqsir: Men shave the head (halq) or shorten hair (taqsir); women shorten hair by a fingertip. This completes Umrah and releases you from ihram.
Important notes
- Stay in ihram until you complete halq/taqsir.
- Maintain cleanliness and avoid arguments or harm.
- Learn the duas and talbiyah from a trusted source.
