New Muslim: Ramadan starter

What Ramadan is, how fasting works, and how to participate safely and sustainably.

Ramadan is a month of worship: fasting, Qur’an, prayer, charity, and community. If you’re new, keep it simple and get support.

Basics

  • Fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib).
  • Eat suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and break fast at sunset.
  • Be extra careful with health—Islam gives exemptions.

Good beginner goal

  • Fast consistently if able.
  • Read a small amount of Qur’an daily.
  • Increase dua and charity.

Sources & notes

  • Qur’an 2:183 (fasting prescribed).
