New Muslim: First steps (first day/week)

A calm roadmap: what matters most first, what can wait, and how to build a sustainable routine.

Welcome. Islam is a journey. The best approach is small steps, done consistently. Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to learn everything at once.

What matters most first

  • Shahadah meaning: worship Allah alone and follow the Messenger ﷺ.
  • Prayer: learn to pray step-by-step (even imperfectly).
  • Basics of halal/haram: start with the obvious (avoid intoxicants, pork).

What can wait

  • Deep fiqh details and debates.
  • Trying to change everything overnight.

Simple routine (10–20 minutes/day)

  1. Read a small amount of Qur’an with translation.
  2. Learn one small prayer piece (Al-Fatihah first).
  3. Make dua for guidance and steadiness.

Community

Find a local masjid or group that is welcoming. A good teacher and a kind community make a huge difference.
