Ghusl (Full body purification) — basics

A beginner overview of ghusl, when it’s required, and a simple step outline.

Ghusl is full-body purification required in certain cases. Because people’s situations differ (e.g., menstruation/postpartum details), learn from a qualified teacher for personal rulings.

When it may be required

  • Major ritual impurity (janabah).
  • After menstruation/postpartum bleeding (for those who experience it).

Simple method (high-level)

  1. Make intention.
  2. Wash the whole body, ensuring water reaches everywhere.
  3. Pay special attention to hair/scalp and skin folds.

Some people combine wudu within ghusl; the exact approach depends on your madhhab.

Sources & notes

  • Qur’an 5:6 (mentions ghusl in the context of major impurity).
